There is an agapanthus by the back porch that has probably been there for 40 years. Despite being initially indifferent to it, it has grown on me. It didn't hurt that Sharon kept a photo log of it blooming last year. Yesterday, I came out of the house to find it looking like this:
Apparently, Holli and our newest dog, Einstein have a new favorite game that involves Einstein tearing around the plant in circles and Holli obliterating the plant by bisecting the circumference. A great geometric strategy for tag. Not so great for gardening.
I found it impossible to be mad. We are often called to sacrifice things we have grown fond of for the happiness of the people, or pets, we hold dear. Maybe the plant will bounce back, maybe it will exit the circle of life in a blaze of puppy and German Shepherd. Either way, it is simply the way things are. There are many things we care about, and a few things we care about more. I refuse to hold the loss of the former against the existence of the latter...especially when they have a face like this one:
